Dodgy scientists on TV

I’ve been watching Surface since it started, and I watch Threshold the other day. I’ve come to realise that characters on TV who are supposed to be scientists but who really don’t know anything about science really annoy me.

Take Surface, for example. In last week’s episode the phoney marine biologist attached a satellite tag to one of the gigantic “unclassified marine vertebrates”. She then went on to make outlandish claims regarding the type of data she’d be able to obtain now that the animal was tagged. How does a satellite tag tell you anything about the lung capacity of a free-ranging, undescribed animal?

You think THAT line from “Surface” was bad. I thought the real highlight was in the 2nd episode when the dodgy scientists identified the marine vertebrate as a mammal… because it had gills.
