Water carpet python

I got a call yesterday from a woman in Fig Tree Pocket who had a carpet snake in her pool filter inlet. The snake had been there for about a week. I went around to have a look, expecting the snake to be sick or injured. But the snake was fine, and as soon as I took him out of the filter inlet and put him on the side of the pool, he dived straight back in and swam directly into the filter inlet again. The woman needed to turn the filter on, so I got him out again and put him in a nearby tree. He was staying underwater quite voluntarily, presumably coming up for air every so often. I’ve heard of this behaviour in things like file snakes and water dragons, but never in a carpet snake. Interesting…

I live on the tweed coast Duranbah red soil and I have a carpet snake in a small fibre glass fishpond lying under water (I did think it was dead, skin beautiful ) definitely alive and circling in the little pond . We have many carpet snakes and the occassional brown plus millions of cane toads and frogs. This is the first time i have seen CARPET SNAKE SWIMMING -good to read your article and understand it is ok ( the snake i mean)
    thank you wendy reid
