These are FANTASTIC Numbat photos!! I was fortunate enough to undertake fieldwork at Dryandra Woodland for 2.5 years (2000 - 2002) as part of my Master research into the ecology of the Western Yellow Robin. I only managed to glimpse the numbat on a number of occassions, the best of which was rescuing 3 baby numbats that had left thier log in obvious desperation following their mother's likely death at the claws of a raptor. I also managed to capture a very blurred image of one carrying nesting material into a log! Interestingly, another reason that these and other marsupials are able to persist in Dryandra is due in large part to the widespread presence of Gastrolobium (Poison Pea) plants that harbour a chemical with an almost identical chemical signature to the 1080 poison! Coming into contact with these bushes is apparently lethal to many introduced animals (thankfully not humans). I still regard Dryandra as one of the most magic places in the world, and am priveleged to have been able to stay there (There was a time when you only paid $15 a night to stay there.... no doubt that's changed)! Thank you for sharing your experiences and photos!!

Fantastic photos of our West Australian mammal emblem the Numbat, and you were certainly very lucky to see any in the wild! There are so few of them now that it is really frightening. For further info on Numbats, their plight, and the recovery plans that are in place to ensure their future existence, have a look at Project Numbat's website www.numbat.org.au

Some of the best numbat pictures I have ever seen--and an excellent description of your encounters with them! Thanks for sharing these experiences. Dryandra is definitely on my list of places to visit now!

Wow! I've always loved numbats too. Stumbled across your Numbat encounter while looking for a site about Numbats to link our Girl Guide Website to. Our Girl Guide Unit is named after the adorable Numbat as our founding members considered themselves to be endangered too.
Thanks for an exciting read and fantastic photos.
