Hi Greg,

I guess it's possible the hatchlings have stayed around if they have enough food and shelter in the area. It could also be that an unusually high number of snakes have hatched in the area recently.

We live in Northern Vic near Murchison. We have 2 cats which we let out during daylight. Over the last 2 - 3 weeks they have been bringing baby Eastern Browns into the house. I read where hatchlings will disperse once they hatch. So far they have caught 4 is it possible that the hatchlings are still grouped together somewhere. The cats don't usually stray far from the house.

Hi Paul,

There could be more snakes around, but it's impossible to say for sure. Snakes disperse when they hatch, so you might have found a snake that was moving away from its place of hatching. Eastern brown snakes can have around 16 eggs per clutch. Hatchlings are very secretive, so any remaining hatchlings are likely to be well hidden. I imagine that a garden shed with lots of shelter on the ground (crates, boxes, etc) would be an ideal hiding spot.

Hope this helps,

Stewart
