About RSS

This is a very brief introduction to RSS.

RSS kind of stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s a way of distributing information that’s updated regularly. You need to have an RSS reader (often called a news aggregator, as it collects and displays news from multiple sources) to view the RSS feed.

You can use desktop news reader applications like these:

FeedDemon for Windows

NetNewsWire for Mac OS X

Safari 2.0 (a Mac OS X web browser) has a built-in RSS reader.

You can also use an online service such as NewsGator to view and manage your feeds.

I use NetNewsWire Lite (available at the bottom of the main NetNewsWire page), because it’s free and I’m a cheapskate.

If you want some feeds to get you started, I’ve got an RSS feed for the Australian Herpetological Classifieds, the main ReptilesDownUnder.com site, and this Stewed Thoughts blog.
