Days 16 & 17: Kakadu

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

On our way from Mt Isa we stopped at Elsey National Park. I had wanted to find some water monitors (both Mertens’ and Mitchell’s water monitors are known from the area), but had no luck on this front. We did manage to find some frogs and some skinks.

Varanus mertensi & Varanus mitchelli habitat (supposedly).

Days 14 & 15: Mt Isa and Daly Waters

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

We drove from Undara to Mt Isa, arriving in the late afternoon. We got a room at the local caravan park, then headed out onto the roads. We only found one animal, but it was an interesting one. We found this pygmy mulga snake (Pseudechis weigeli/Pseudechis ‘pailsus‘) on the side of the road. He was [...]

Day 13: Undara Volcanic National Park

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

From Chillagoe we headed to Undara Volcanic National Park. Undara wasn’t a planned stop, but we were in the area and I’d heard good things about Undara. I was surprised to find that the only way you can access the national park is to go on a (relatively expensive) tour with the Undara Experience people. [...]

Day 12: Chillagoe

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

As we left the Atherton Tablelands, we stopped at Granite Gorge to see some cute little Mareeba rock wallabies (Petrogale mareeba). We saw a few frilled dragons (Chlamydosaurus kingii) run off the road. One ran up a tree, while the other ran up a termite mound.

Day 8: Tully Gorge

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

We left Charters Towers and headed back to the coast and up to Tully. We arrived mid-afternoon and went for a short walk to see what we could see. Down by the river I saw a little head peeking out of a hole in a tree stump. I waited patiently for the body to emerge.

Saproscincus [...]

Day 7: Charters Towers

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Day seven saw us heading inland, from The Caves on the coast, through Emerald and up to Charters Towers. It was mainly a driving day, but we did find some roadkill along the way. We got some rooms at the Charters Towers pub and then headed out for a night drive.

Roadkilled lesser black whipsnake (Demansia [...]

Day 6: The Caves

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Day six saw us heading from Girraween to the small township of The Caves, just north of Rockhampton. We camped at a campground there, where I discovered that the tent I had brought with me lacked any tent poles. Good work, Stewart.
In the morning we spent a few minutes poking around an area of limestone [...]
